Movie Review - GOOD

Director JD Chekravarthy comes up with a new film after Homam. While Homam had all elements like action, suspense, drama, romance and big fights, the new film Siddham is just a plain cop story.

Story:

Dayananand (Jagapathi Babu) is a circle inspector in the task force. He is a family man married to Sindhu Menon and has a young daughter. Daya is popularly referred to an encounter specialist. He along with his team comprising of Narsing Yadav and other fellow officers eliminates one dreaded gangster after another.

Daya gets full support from his senior, police commissioner Kota Srinivasa Rao. However when a new commissioner Sivalinga Prasad (Radha Ravi) comes in place of Kota, trouble starts for Daya.

The new commissioner is a sympathizer of Chota, a dreaded don. Chota has a standing rivalry with another mafia leader Bilal as the two of them fight all the time to gain control of the underworld in Hyderabad.

After Daya catches Ashok (Subbaraju) a sharp shooter and the right hand man of Chota, Daya’s wife is shot dead.

Who killed Daya’s wife and how does Daya go about his task despite stiff opposition from the police commissioner and how he finally traces down the killer of his wife and eliminate him forms the basis for the rest of the story.

Performance:

The film is a Jagapathi Babu show all the way. He sports a new style for the film. Jagapathi Babu with his shortly cropped hair looks every bit the encounter specialist Daya, which he portrays on screen. He has played cop several times before and this is another good performance from him.

Kota has a brief role and he does justice to it. Mukul Dev as Bilal does a neat job. Sindhu Menon plays the role of Jagapathi Babu’s wife and her role is very brief. Narsing Yadav looks different in his shortly cropped hair and he also does a neat job.

The film Siddham is an out and out cop story and there is no room for much entertainment. The film has been made well and director JD Chekravarthy needs to be commended for making a clean film without too much violence, blood and gore that is so common in action films involving gangsters.

Finally, Siddham will appeal to only those people who are interested in cop films. The film has nothing much to offer to the family audience and children.

Delhi 6 hindi movie Review

Movie Review: Delhi 6; Star Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri and Waheeda Rehman; Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra; Rating: *** - Is worth a watch.

Delhi 6 is a delightful musical run through the Hindu and Muslim cultures of Old Delhi as seen through the eyes of protagonist Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) who comes to India to fulfill the desire of his terminally ill Daadi (Waheeda Rehman) to spend the last days of her life in her hometown. As Roshan after a brief culture shock, tries to understand the complexities of relations that kept his people apart from each other as well as close to each other, he slowly gets attached to Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) and the chemistry grows, which is very convincingly directed using rich background music and believable day-to-day situations.

The first half, though appearing a little lengthy focuses on reverse-culture-shock jokes, lavishly reproduced Ram Leela, a visit to the Taj Mahal, and a cow giving birth in the street. It is in the second half that things take a more serious turn. Unwelcome traditions and smoldering religious hatred comes bubbling to the surface and erupt into a Do the Right Thing climax that takes everyone by surprise. Several characters and subplots weaved together to relate to the central plot of analyzing beliefs against rational thinking, with a touch of humor is quite entertaining but one has to endure the laborious and forced accent of Abhishek Bachchan throughout the movie. Although at several places, the movie seems predictable, Mehra succeeds in putting surprises well in time and balance. The climax gets dragged due to cameos and voiceovers. Although Roshan’s attempts to put belief and trust in people ahead of belief in customs and religion deserve a pat, what disappoints is Mehra getting preachy at many places. Rahman’s soulful music takes the film to a completely different level altogether.

Mehra and his cameraman Binod Pradhan have succeeded in capturing the buzz of Delhi city very well in every frame. Those living outside of India will find that connect with that feeling of wanting to be in both places. The song in the second half which juxtaposes Abhishek’s life in the US with the people and life in India is beautifully done as well. Hat’s off to the director and technical team there.

Abhishek has delivered one of his better performances but his American accent doesn’t really work. Sonam Kapoor doesn’t have much to do but except for the climax but she carries herself immensely well. Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri and Rishi Kapoor are simply outstanding. The huge ensemble cast comprising of acclaimed actors such as Raghubir Yadav, Pavan Malhotra, Supriya Pathak Shah, Deepak Dobriyal, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Tanvi Azmi and Atul Kulkarni do a wonderful job.

Just look at the diversity of topics addressed convincingly through brilliant performances and slick editing, you will realize why I say it’s worth a watch!

KATHA
Drona (Master Sai Krishna) is the son of a sincere police officer (Mukesh Rishi). He shares ample love with his mother Meenakshi (Seetha). But a small mistake by him welcomes the anger of his father who batters him blue and black. Followed by that incident, Drona runs away from his house. He grows up (Nithin) and emerges as a robber. He happens to meet his parents and lives with them accidentally, keeping his past in secret with them. Why he maintains that secrecy? Where did he live all these years? What made him turn as a hardcore robber? Will the parents come to know that the boy for who they have given shelter is their own son Drona? That forms rest of the plot.

NATANA
Nithin has improved a lot especially in dance. He is showcasing many complex dance movements with ease and agility. But he still needs to groom his diction. Again he made a mistake by picking up a wrong line which doesn’t suit him.

Priyamani is the main attraction for this film as she revealed herself in bikini for the first time on silver screen. Unfortunately there is nothing else from her other than that glamour show. Although a National Award winning actress she has no big scope to act here.

Mukesh Rishi appeared in positive character role and Seetha is apt in her part. Siva Prasad and Kelly Dorjee have played antagonists and there is nothing special to speak about them as they did run-of-the-mill stuff.

Comedian Sudhakar, after a very long time, appeared in a guest role as doctor.

Music is ok with some songs but the background score is cacophonous. The dialogues are also not so exciting and the direction on a whole is amateurish. Some scenes resembled TV serials with extra length.

MYNUSLU
1. The scene where Kelly Dorjee holds Seetha in front of a shopping mall while Nithin comes out swiftly to save her - is a perfect TV serial styled, with too many close up shots.
2. The introduction scene of Nithin with SUV and helicopter chase is overdosed and unconvincing.
3. Micro Capsule injections used by antagonists are also ludicrous.

And director has taken liberties to lift scenes from the film ‘Batman’ (during robbery) and also from the popular Yana Gupta’s ‘Bapujee Jara Dheere Chalo…’ song (on Rakhi Sawanth while she pours beer on her legs to quench the thirst of lusty tongues).

CONCLUSIONU
It’s an upside down effort. Only the much publicized Priyamani’s bikini song should pull mass crowds to theaters. And the film hardly finds repeated audiences.

The comedy is also weak although Venu Madhav tried to spill some laughs. The track is written very weak and hence things didn’t work at all. Sunil appeared in some scenes and ok. Arundhati comedy is grooved on Venu Madhav which would have got extended in proper way and complete manner.

First half of the film moves heavily with lot of non-exciting scenes. Second half has action elements but those aren’t in tune with the interest levels of audiences. The overdosed subject with an island background has diluted the tempo of the film on a whole. Climax is weak and boring.

To sum up the only saving grace for this film to reduce the loss to maximum extent is Priyamani’s glamour show on posters.
